Uncover the Sacred Symbols and Burial Traditions of Toraja
Tongkonan were actually standing as material buildings quintessential Toraja traditional houses. That is in the typical shape of the boat with a long roof protruding in the front and back. Each Tongkonan carries a unique history, and their people view it as more than just a physical structure. They see it as a visual symbol of their extended family, both past and present.
The people of Toraja have varied burial practices. Kambira village intrigues many visitors, as locals once buried dead babies inside tree trunks so nature could ‘absorb’ them. Tree burials no longer occur in Toraja since 50 years ago.
This tour lets you admire cliffside graves, built with wooden effigies of ancestors known as Tau Tau placed on balconies. The Toraja people have built these graves for centuries.
Possibly witness a festive funeral called “Ma’nene” that happens every three years to honor the villagers love for the deceased person.
In other burial rituals, the Toraja people place deceased family members in caves. As you enter the cave you will see skulls and bones scattered around on the floor and hanging on the ceiling.
Suaya and Sangala are the burial sites of Toraja royals and King Sangalla.
